Lime Class: Year 5
Here you will be able to find the Year 5 curriculum overview and our termly newsletters.
I have also included a list of 50 highly recommended books that the children should look to explore over the course of the year.
Lime Class: Key Information
PE
Our PE days are Wednesdays and Fridays and children are expected to take part in all PE lessons. They should come to school in the correct PE kit on these days.
Water Bottles
Please make sure your child comes to school with a named water bottle.
Homework
At Bartons, we believe that education is a life-long process. A child’s education does not cease when they leave our school premises; learning at home is an essential part of good education.
Home Learning is any work or activity completed outside lesson time, either alone, with parents, or others. Home Learning makes an important contribution to progress at school. It is used to enhance and support the pupils’ learning within school and also to prepare them for secondary school.
For Lime Class, homework will be set via Seesaw on a Thursday and unless specified, will be due in the following Wednesday. Your child should upload their homework to Seesaw by this day. Additionally, Children are expected to read either to an adult at home or to themselves for at least 15 minutes a day. Their reading record should be signed every time they read so that we can keep track at school. If your child reads competently to themselves, ask them some questions about the book so that you can see if they have understood what they have read. Discussing different texts with your children will help them to develop their own love of reading.
It is also expected that every member of Lime Class carries out one of the following homework activities per half-term:
Trips in Year 5
Autumn 2 (November/December 2024) - Winchester Science Centre and Planetarium
- The expected cost of this trip (including coach travel, admission to the science centre, admission to the planetarium and a private workshop) is £25.
Spring 2 (March 2025) - Paultons Park
- The expected cost of this trip (including coach travel, admission to park and a private workshop) is £35.
Summer Term 2025
- Letters will be sent out regarding the residential trip in Year 6.
Working With Others (WWO)
During our first week in Lime Class, we carried out a number of WWO activities. The skills required to carry out these activities equip the children with the necessary social skills to work together which enhances their well-being and ability to learn in the classroom.
The children in Lime Class worked brilliantly together and managed to solve every problem that they faced!
Maths Investigation Day
Maths Investigation Day had an Olympic/Paralympic theme this year as it took place in the immediate aftermath of the Games in Paris. The children had great fun dressing-up in their Maths costumes and really engaged with all of the different activities that we carried out throughout the day. The Lime Class 'Potato Olympics' was a highlight, where the children were able to develop their skills and understanding across a range of key mathematical concepts
(including time, measure and decimal numbers).
The children have absolutely loved becoming engineers and designing their own shaduf (a hand-operated device for lifting water) as part of our Ancient Egyptian topic this half term. At Bartons, we are lucky enough to possess a wonderful STEM Hub so the children were not only able to design their devices, but construct them as well. The class relished the opportunity to use our STEM Hub and produced some very effective shadufs that were actually able to lift water when we tested them.
Maths Week
During Maths Week, Lime Class participated in a variety of challenges linked to our Crystal Maze theme. We explored mathematical themes and concepts from ancient civilisations in India, China, Greece and Egypt. The children demonstrated fantastic WWO skills throughout the week, pushing themselves and working collaboratively to solve a number of complex problems.
Winchester Science Centre & Planetarium
We had a brilliant time on our trip to Winchester and the children in Lime Class represented Bartons perfectly! We learned so much during our fascinating planetarium show and the engaging workshop, but we also had lots of time to independently explore the wonderful exhibits. The children have been captivated by our new 'Stargazing' topic, so it was great to see them making the most of everything that the planetarium and science centre had to offer.
Our Topic Work - Autumn Term
We began the year by exploring the Ancient Egyptian civilisation. The children in Lime Class did not hesitate to engage with their new topic and had so many questions that they wanted answered. Our first significant piece of writing in Year 5 was an explanation text about the process of mummification whereby the children were giving the opportunity to write about all of the gruesome details using the new skills and techniques that we had first explored. We then focused our learning around a significant historical figure named Howard Carter, who discovered the tomb of Tutankhamun in 1922. The children loved writing from his perspective, pretending that they were the ones who had made this tremendous discovery.
Our second topic, Space, also captivated the children in Lime Class. As part of our learning in Science, we have explored the Solar System. The children have created their own mnemonic devices to help them remember the order of the planets, we have explored the relationship between the Earth, the Moon and the Sun and discussed why we have different seasons on Earth. We have also linked our learning to another significant historical figure, Tim Peake, the British astronaut who visited the International Space Station and was born in Chichester.
